When to Switch Your Puppy to Adult Food

Your puppy seems to grow overnight, and with that rapid growth comes shifting nutritional needs. While puppy food is packed with the high calories, proteins, and fats needed for building bones and muscles, staying on it too long can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

Knowing exactly when—and how—to transition to adult food is vital for your dog’s long-term health.

The Timeline: When to Make the Switch

The right time to transition depends almost entirely on your dog’s expected adult size. Because larger breeds grow for a longer period, their timeline looks a bit different than a toy poodle's:

Small / Toy Breeds (Under 20 lbs): 9 to 12 months

Medium Breeds (20 to 50 lbs): 12 months

Large / Giant Breeds (Over 50 lbs): 12 to 18 months

How to Transition (The 7-Day Rule)

A sudden switch in diet is a shortcut to an upset stomach. To keep your pup's digestive system happy, use a gradual, seven-day transition method.

Days 1 & 2 (75% Puppy, 25% Adult): Mix a small amount of the new adult kibble into their current puppy food. Watch for any signs of lethargy or loose stool.

Days 3 & 4 (50% Puppy, 50% Adult): Blend the foods in an even split. This is usually when a puppy's digestive system adapts to the new nutrient profile.

Days 5 & 6 (25% Puppy, 75% Adult): The bowl should now be mostly adult food. If your pup is a fast eater, consider serving this on a textured feeding mat to slow them down and aid digestion.

Day 7 (100% Adult Food): Your dog is officially transitioned! Monitor their weight over the next month to ensure their portion sizes match their adult activity levels.
